Board Bios

April Flanders, Chair
April Flanders is a Professor of Studio Art at Appalachian State University. She earned her MFA in Studio Art at Arizona State University and she teaches courses in printmaking, book-arts and foundations, as well as the capstone courses in the BFA Studio Art Program. April has been a TRCS parent for the past seven years.

Melissa Thomas, Vice Chair
Melissa Thomas is a Business Analyst at University of Virginia Community Credit Union. In her off-time, she is an Assistant Instructor at Spirit Ride Therapeutic Riding Center in Banner Elk. Her family relocated to NC from OR 5 years ago and they made their way to Boone because the community felt like home. Melissa has been a TRCS parent for the past four years.

Dawn O'Neal-Shumate, Secretary
Alumni parent Dawn O’Neal-Shumate has assisted the school in various ways over the past 13 years from volunteering in the office when it was needed to helping lead an afterschool yearbook club for two years. For the last 10 years she has worked as a local documentary-style photographer providing portrait, commercial and editorial photography to the local Boone community and beyond. As the artist behind the design concept of the High Country Capable photovoice project, she donates much of her time to providing photography to local non-profits including Two Rivers.

Carole Greene
Carole Greene has been a TRCS parent for almost two years and works at Appalachian as the Assistant Director of TRIO Student Support Services (SSS), a federally funded grant program for low-income, first-generation students. She has a background in music therapy and counseling. She is passionate about inclusion and diversity, creativity, and sustainability in education. As a two-time alumna of Appalachian, Carole is proud to be a member of the “Boone-erang” club and has lived in the community for nearly 20 years. She enjoys hiking, gardening, reading, and spending time with her family.

Twila Wingrove
Twila Wingrove, JD, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Appalachian State University. She specializes in Developmental and Legal Psychology, and one area of her work focuses on the experiences of children in foster care. She teaches courses in forensic psychology, and also serves as a statistical consultant. Twila has lived in Boone since 2009 and is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the Two Rivers community as a member of the Board of Directors.

Cacey Wells
Cacey Wells is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Appalachian State University. He earned both his Ph.D. and M.Ed. in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum - Mathematics Education from the University of Oklahoma. Cacey taught high school mathematics for six years in San Antonio, TX and served as a professional development coordinator at the University of Oklahoma’s K20 Center for three years. Cacey and his family enjoy being part of the Boone community. When not in the office, you can typically find him fly fishing, biking, or hiking in the High Country.
